How to Apply

Maths

“The essence of mathematics lies in its freedom.” | Georg Cantor

At St Cuthbert’s we want every child to develop deep, secure, and connected mathematical understanding, enabling them to think, reason, and problem-solve with confidence. We believe that all children can succeed in mathematics when they are given the time, support, and opportunity to explore concepts in depth.

Through a mastery approach, we aim to ensure that pupils:
• Build strong foundations through small, coherent steps that make learning accessible and meaningful
• Develop fluency that enables them to recall and apply knowledge efficiently
• Use representations and structures to reveal mathematical relationships and support conceptual understanding
• Reason mathematically, explaining their thinking with clarity and precision
• Apply variation to make connections, spot patterns, and generalise
• Embrace challenge, understanding that struggle is a natural and valuable part of learning
• Believe in themselves as mathematicians, capable of thinking creatively and persevering when faced with difficulty

Our classrooms are places where mathematical talk is encouraged, mistakes are valued, and every child is supported to achieve mastery. We are committed to equity: success in mathematics is not predetermined — it is cultivated.
