The Early Years is a crucial stage of learning where children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that form a strong foundation for future learning. Our curriculum is carefully designed to be language rich, to ignite curiosity, and to foster a love of learning through purposeful play and meaningful experiences. Communication and language underpin all areas of learning in EYFS. We prioritise high quality adult–child interactions, daily storytelling, songs and rhymes, and rich opportunities for talk through play and discussion. This supports children to develop confidence in speaking and listening, laying strong foundations for reading and writing.
Our curriculum encourages children to be curious, ask questions and explore the world around them. We support children to think creatively, solve problems and develop independence, resilience and perseverance. Carefully planned provision ensures children are challenged and supported to become active and engaged learners. Play is central to our Early Years provision. Through purposeful play, children rehearse skills, deepen understanding and make sense of their experiences. Our curriculum follows the EYFS framework, ensuring coverage of all seven areas of learning while remaining responsive to children’s interests and next steps.
By the end of the Early Years, children at St Cuthbert’s will have secure foundations in communication, early literacy and mathematics. They will demonstrate positive learning behaviours, confidence and independence, and show kindness, respect and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
We aim to ensure all children leave the Early Years happy, confident and well prepared for the next stage of their learning journey.
